AI Discovered a New Color We Can’t See — But It Exists?
Is it possible for a machine to see something we can’t — like a new color? The internet has been buzzing with claims that artificial intelligence (AI) may have discovered colors beyond human perception. But is there truth to it?
What Really Happened?
Back in 2017, researcher Janelle Shane trained a neural network using 7,700 Sherwin-Williams paint colors. The AI tried to invent new colors and names based on that data. The result? Some hilarious and surreal names like “Snowbonk,” “Stoner Blue,” and “Bank Butt.” But the colors themselves? Totally visible to humans.
So no, AI hasn’t technically discovered a color we can’t see — yet. What it did do is creatively remix existing color data and output combinations that feel alien, but still fall within the range of human sight.
Can AI Discover Invisible Colors?
Here’s the truth: Our eyes can only detect light within a specific wavelength range — the “visible spectrum.” Even if AI were to mathematically generate a new light frequency, we physically can’t see it unless we evolve new sensory hardware.
Some animals like the mantis shrimp have up to 12 types of color receptors, compared to our 3 (red, green, and blue). They literally see colors we can’t imagine. AI could simulate what those colors might look like — but it wouldn’t be real to us.
But... What If?
The idea of AI exploring visual territories we can’t reach is still exciting. AI art models and neural networks may never give us “new” colors, but they are generating visual ideas that feel strange, futuristic, and almost otherworldly. For now, these are illusions — but in the future? Who knows.

Final Thoughts
AI hasn’t discovered a new color outside human vision — but it has created new ways of seeing what already exists. And sometimes, that’s just as mind-blowing.
